File 12 · Cosy life-sim MMO review
Palia
All the comfort of a farming sim, set in a shared world where other players are only ever helpful.

Palia takes the cosy life-sim — a plot of land, a village of characters, a set of soothing skills — and places it in a shared online world. You arrive as a newly appeared human in a fantasy valley, are handed an axe, a pickaxe and a tent, and are sent off to make yourself at home. There is no combat beyond hunting with a bow and nothing that can set you back.
Multiplayer is designed around kindness. Resources are not contested: if two players chop the same rare tree, both receive wood, and doing it together gives each of you a little extra. Cooking is a playful group activity, with friends chopping and stirring at separate stations. Chat tends to be people calling out where a rare find has appeared so that others can come and share it.
The housing system is the long-term draw. Furniture is placed freely, plots expand, and the builder tools are flexible enough for cottages, greenhouses and elaborate gardens. Villagers have friendship and romance storylines with plenty of charm, and the main story explores what happened to the humans of this world.
It is lighter on depth than the single-player classics of the genre, and committed players can exhaust the current goals between updates. The premium outfits cost more than we would like, although they are purely visual. As a calm place to spend half an hour with a cup of tea — alone or with a friend on another platform — it does its job beautifully.
Score breakdown
A warm welcome: villagers hand out tools and goals one friendly step at a time.
Farm, fish, forage, cook, decorate. Nothing attacks you and nothing is urgent.
Regular updates add zones and story, but dedicated players can run out of goals.
Every gameplay item is earned by playing; the cosmetic outfits are on the pricey side.
Broad platform support with cross-play, though the Switch version is visibly softer.
